World Cancer Research Day 2024
Message from the Scientific Director, Dr. Fei-Fei Liu

September 24th marks World Cancer Research Day. Established in 2016, this day aims to shine a light on cancer research worldwide by celebrating its progress. Last year, the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research became a supporting organization for World Cancer Research Day, highlighting cancer research as a key strategy to saving the lives of those affected by cancer as well as improving their quality of life.

The World Declaration for Research on Cancer outlines key goals in accelerating cancer research, including a commitment to funding, training and collaboration. In the spirit for World Cancer Research Day, I am delighted to announce a new opportunity with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to support the next generation of cancer researchers. This year, we are launching the inaugural AACR-CIHR Scholar-in-Training Awards to support trainees to attend and present their research at the AACR Annual Meeting 2025, which will take place April 25-30th in Chicago. AACR is the world's largest cancer conference with over 20,000 attendees from around the globe, representing an outstanding international forum for cancer research.

Moreover, applications for our annual Early Career Researcher (ECR) Workshop are currently open, an opportunity for early investigators to advance their research careers through networking, skill development and learning. As part of the Institute's commitment to promoting the sustainability of Canada's world-class cancer research ecosystem, I encourage everyone to share and apply to these opportunities.

Finally, I feel privileged to represent the Canadian cancer research community at both national and international fora. I would like to thank each member of our cancer research community for your continued dedication and efforts in advancing Canada's impact in cancer research. To all of the researchers, persons with lived and living experience, healthcare professionals, research funders and policymakers, your contributions are so important; and together, we can eradicate cancer in our lifetime!

Best regards,

Fei-Fei Liu, MD, FRCPC, FASTRO, FCAHS
Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Cancer Research
